 I
had some preconceived notions about what an album from Gladys Knight's
choir would sound like. I just knew the music was going to be something
the LDS market wasn't used to hearing.
I was right to a certain degree. The music is definitely peppier
than say, Afterglow. But I was pleasantly surprised by the interesting
variety of music selected. There was a nice mixture of Baptist Spirituals,
a Polynesian song and LDS favorites, like "Come, Come Ye Saints."
Also, the performances were balanced between solos, duets, chorals
and ensembles. I had the distinct impression that a fireside with
the choir would be a Spirit-filled and rousing revival. I suspect
people would be tempted to clap, though that is not usually done
at Mormon events.
As one would expect, the production is professional and polished.
The musicianship is impressive. All of the songs were solidly performed,
but I think my favorite on the album was the Polynesian song, "Jesu
Me Kanaka Waiwai."
This is a solid 5 stars. Buy it. You won't regret it.
